Blog Post #7: Discipleship
What did you learn about the original disciples from the group projects? Which disciple did you find most interesting and why? Based on what you learned, what are the characteristics of people who follow Christ? Do you feel that you display any of these characteristics? Why or why not?
I learned many things about the original disciples from the group projects. First of all, almost all of the original disciples were martyred. They either died from being crucified, stoned, or beheaded. Those who were not martyred were John because he died of old age and Judas because he hung himself. Many of the disciples were also fishermen and some of them were called by Jesus while fishing together, such as Peter, James the Greater, John, and Andrew. Also, most of their remains are buried in places dedicated to them. For example, Peter was buried at St. Peter's Basilica and Andrew was buried at the Basilica of St. Andrew.
I was most interested by Judas since he was the one to betray Jesus. I also find it interesting that Jesus might have known that Judas would betray him and that he picked him as his disciple anyway. Judas had a different job than most of the disciples and it is believed that he had a job in handling money. I wonder why Judas became a disciple in the first place. I feel like he would have been devoted to Jesus in order to be a disciple so then he would not have betrayed Jesus. I wonder if Jesus forgave him for betraying him because he seemed to have felt remorse since he hung himself. This image is of Judas kissing Jesus, which is how he betrayed him. He kissed Jesus to show the soldiers that he was who they should arrest.

After hearing all of the group projects, I believe that people who follow Christ are loyal, ambitious, and determined. First, they are loyal to Christ because they continue to believe in him and God. Second, they are ambitious because they want to spread the word of God. Third, they are determined because they will not stop spreading the word of God even if there are obstacles in their way. Besides Judas, I believe that all of the original disciples always showed these characteristics. I think Jesus chose his disciples based on these three characteristics.
I feel that I display the characteristics of loyalty, ambition, and determination. However, I do not display them to the same extent as the original disciples. I believe that I am loyal to most people like my family and friends and that I try to keep my word as best as I can. I am ambitious towards my career and future. I also think I am ambitious in making others happy and helping my family and friends when they need it. Similarly, I am also determined in succeeding in my future and to helping my friends and family. However, I do believe that I can still do better to display these characteristics to everyone.
