Blog Post #1: Bible Archaeology
What are some new things that you learned about Jesus? What did you find to be most fascinating and why? Who are two people in your life who display similar qualities as Jesus?
I learned a few new things about Jesus when researching my project. First and for most, before I was assigned my presentation of Sermon on the Mount I had never heard of it. Once I had done some research, I learned that Sermon on the Mount directly involved Jesus and his disciples together. It was a teaching of Jesus that He spoke on the Mount of Beatitudes. He had taken his disciples up the mountainside and told them of His teachings. At first, I did not know that Jesus was involved in the Sermon on the Mount. His teachings involved the beatitudes, murder, adultery, giving to the needy, prayer, true and false prophets and disciples, and many more topics. His disciples were amazed "because he taught as one who had authority, and not as their teachers of the law" (Bible Gateway). The picture below shows the Sermon on the Mount and Jesus giving his teachings to his disciples.
In the other presentations, I only heard parts of The Three Wise Men and the Star and Reign of Herod and the Slaughter of the Innocents before. Now that I have seen all presentations, I now know so much more about Jesus and all these stories. I learned that Jesus was killed and crucified at the site of Calvary. Joseph of Arimathea was taught by Jesus in secret and was the one that buried Him and gave Him respect. Jesus' first recorded miracle was when he turned water into wine and He was able to break loaves and fish into pieces to feed thousands of people. Lastly, I learned that the shroud of Turin was the cloth that Jesus was believed to be buried in. All of these stories have increased my knowledge of Jesus as well as other people and places.
The topic of the the Shroud of Turin was the most fascinating to me because it was really interesting. I could not imagine how the imprint of the body was able to stay on the cloth. The fact that this happened about 1000 years ago makes it all the more. Whether it was Jesus' body is something no one knows for certain. Knowing that the cloth still exists and is displayed for everyone to see is amazing. I find this to be fascinating in a scientific way than a religious or spiritual way. If Jesus was certainly real and the body wrapped in the cloth were Jesus than that would be mind blowing to know that we have discovered who the body was and the fact that we were able to figure it out. I also found Wine at Cana and the Loaves and Fishes as well as Reign of Herod and the Slaughter of the Innocents to be interesting stories.
I believe my older sister and my grandpa to be people in my life that displayed similar qualities as Jesus. First, my sister is someone who really cares about helping others and is selfless. Although she is busy attending law school and working, she always tries to take the time to help others for what ever they need. Also, she is someone that I really look up to and see as a mentor because I admire all of her qualities of being committed, patient, respectful, and loving. I also see my grandpa as loving because he loves all of his children and grandchildren equally. I admire his appreciation of life because he lives everyday being thankful for what he has which is something that everyone needs to be. I hear so many stories from my grandpa's friends and other people that don't even know him that well and they always tell what an amazing and giving person he is. I see my grandpa as very humble because he has done so much for everyone and he doesn't wish for anything in return except maybe for a simple thank you every once in a while. My sister and my grandpa are two of the best people in my life and they carry many qualities that Jesus has. The picture above shows who Jesus is which show his qualities that I believe that my sister and grandpa have some of.
